Divisiveness over wind turbines apparent at town hall meeting in Picton

By Nicole Kleinsteuber

People against the plan to build industrial wind turbines along Prince Edward County’s south shore made up a large number of the audience at Thursday night’s town hall in Picton.

Among the 200 in attendance were residents from Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Kingston.  The three-hour meeting was organized and hosted as a public town hall by Prince Edward Hastings MPP Todd Smith at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.  During his introduction Smith said divisiveness between community members and the demand for public consultation led him to host the meeting.

“One of the damn shames that the government has done to us, is industrial wind developments have gotten between me and my neighbours,” said a resident from South Bay late in the public comment period.

“This was an opportunity for anyone on either side to take the stage and speak publicly on the issue,” said Smith. “It seemed like many of the people who spoke first were people who are not real happy about the idea of having wind turbines on the south shore.”

There were a few wind supporters present but only one made himself known to the crowd.

Prince Edward Hastings MPP Todd Smith wants to give Prince Edward County residents the opportunity to have their say when it comes to wind developments planned along the county’s south shore.

Smith has invited the community to participate in a public consultation tonight at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Picton at 6 p.m.

Join Prince Edward County Voice reporter Nicole Kleinsteuber on Twitter @ PECVoice for live coverage.

“We thought it would be a good idea to have a town hall meeting so we could send all of the different thoughts on this project to the directly to the Ministry of Environment,” said Smith. “We want to make sure the messages from the members of this municipality get sent to Queen’s Park and the message is sent loud and clear on this issue.”

Gilead Power is the wind company whose proposal for a nine turbine wind farm on Ostrander Point is in the final stages of review by the Ministry of Environment. At Smith’s request the public was granted a three-week extension to comment on the pending project.

Follow up to ‘Moving Forward’

By Nicole Kleinsteuber

Thank you to everyone who logged on and participated in our event last night. It was great to see so the community come out and discuss the idea of moving forward past the debate over wind turbines. The public and panellists presented some strong solutions to this conflict. The idea of obtaining accurate information that is easy for the community to understand is monumental. As a journalist it provided me with new insights as to how I can better serve the community.

We had an intense amount of activity last night. A large number of questions, comments and concerns were coming in simultaneously and this jammed the server a few times. It wasn’t our intention for anyone to feel like your comments were being censored or excluded from this discussion. I apologize for any frustration this may have caused. I am posting the concerns that were emailed to Rob and I during and after the event. As promised I will direct your questions to the appropriate personal for follow up.

Prince Edward County council’s stance against wind project location doesn’t represent everyone

By Nicole Kleinsteuber

Local wind supporters addressed council Tuesday night requesting they defeat a motion to submit a series of concerns to the Ministry of Environment and Gilead Power.

“We do not find it to be relevant to the original motion, reflective of sound science or representative of the greater good,” said past president of PEC federation of agriculture John Thompson.

The motion said the municipality of Prince Edward County believed Ostrander Point is an inappropriate site for the proposed wind farm and should not be approved for a list of reasons. The concerns ranged from unresolved adequacy of the proposed setbacks of turbines from residents homes to infrastructure having negative impacts on birds, wildlife and the environment.

Rob Williams, a member of the County Sustainability Group agreed with Thompson when he addressed council. The local group wants the community to adopt green initiatives, including windmills.

Moving forward – a candid discussion on wind developments in Prince Edward County

By Nicole Kleinsteuber

The controversy over wind farm developments in Prince Edward County has fuelled countless discussions, debates, consultations and protests over the past decade.

A number of county residents, environmental groups and government officials have objected to wind projects over that time. Community debates, letters to government officials, protests and lawsuits began when wind developers like SkyPower Corp, Vision Quest Windelectric Inc, and Gilead Power applied for zoning permits to construct wind turbines. WPD Canada is the most recent proponent to submit an application to the Ministry of Environment and is working with private landowners to construct 30 turbines.

Gilead Power has been planning to build nine wind turbines on Ostrander Point since 2006.
Their application is in its final stages of approval and they hope to start constructing later this year.

Prince Edward County council is sending in their comments and concerns on the project to the Ministry of Environment to be posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights registry.
